Blogs in the Biology classroom, if correctly monitored and incorporated into the curriculum, can effectively create communities in which students come together to collaborate, learn and build knowledge, a characteristic feature of 21st century (McLoughlin & Lee, 2007). Perhaps one of the most effective uses of Blogs in the Biology classroom is providing students with an online environment which allows them to increase their literacy and discuss abstract concepts, commonly experienced in Biology, with other students, therefore enhancing their understanding through other students viewpoints and understandings. In order to be effective however, teachers must actively incorporate Blogs into their classroom both optimistically and cautiously to promote learning environments that are more personal, participatory and collaborative.

Simone, your statement on using blogs to address the needs of the 21st century is a very valid one indeed. In fact the stage 6 syllabus is designed to be taught in a way so as to prepare students for the future work force. Employers in the 21st century value skills of communication and collaboration and web 2.0 tools such as blogs and wikis help address these skills.
ReplyDeleteHi Simone, I also agree that blogs allow a community of leaners where students can collaborate ideas, researched information and assist each other in their learning. I even found that through our experience using blogs throughout this course I was able to read others blogs and make comments which enhanced my understanding of certain topics. Blogs really do provide opportunities for students to enhance their learning experience. It is true though that teachers need to monitor and guide students throughout the blog process so they achieve the maximum educational experience.
